Step 1
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
Step 2
Place cabbage in a large pot with enough lightly salted water to cover. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer until tender, 5 to 7 minutes. Drain and allow to steam dry for a minute or two.
Step 3
Melt margarine in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onion and cook until golden. Reduce the heat to low. Add cheese, and simmer until melted. Stir in mushroom soup, cabbage, breadcrumbs, salt, and pepper. Transfer to a 2-quart casserole dish.

Bake in the preheated oven until cheese begins to bubble, 20 to 30 minutes.
