Step 1
Cream together shortening and sugar in a large bowl until smooth. Beat in eggs one at a time then stir in vanilla. Combine flour, cocoa, baking powder and salt. Stir into shortening-sugar mixture. Stir in walnuts. Cover dough and chill for at least one hour.
Step 2
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Roll dough into walnut-sized balls. Roll balls in confectioners' sugar. Place cookies 2 inches apart on the cookie sheet.
Step 3
Bake in the preheated oven for 10 to 12 minutes until the cookies spread slightly and appear crackled on top. Cool on a baking sheet for 5 minutes before removing to a wire rack to cool completely.
