Recipe Instructions

Step 1
Stir apples, water, sugars, lemon juice, cinnamon stick, lemon zest, and salt together in a large pot until well combined. Cover and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low and cook until apples are soft, 20 to 30 minutes.
Step 2
Remove the pot from heat. Remove and discard cinnamon stick and lemon zest. Mash apples with a potato masher until desired consistency is reached.

  • 4 strips lemon zest
  • 1 (3 inch) piece cinnamon stick
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 0.25 cup dark brown sugar
  • 0.25 cup white sugar, or less to taste
  • 3.5 pounds apples - peeled, cored, and quartered
