Recipe Instructions

Step 1
Heat oil in a deep fryer to 365 degrees F (185 degrees C).
Step 2
Whisk buttermilk, egg, and bacon drippings together in a large bowl. Whisk flour, cornmeal, sugar, baking powder, salt, and baking soda together in another large bowl. Make a well in center of dry ingredients. Add wet ingredients to well and mix until smooth.
Step 3
Pat hot dogs dry with paper towels. Insert wooden sticks into hot dogs. Dip hot dogs in batter one at a time, shaking off excess. Deep fry a few at a time in hot oil until deep golden brown. Drain on paper towels or serve on paper plates.
