Living in the Caribbean is a wonderful way of life! I am always trying to come up with new recipes that combine my new culture and my roots. Although I grew up in the Pacific Northwest, southern barbecue was a big part of my youth. Coming up with unique BBQ sauces was family fun. Spice this recipe up or down according to your personal taste.

Recipe Instructions

Step 1
Gather the ingredients.
Step 2
Heat the olive oil in a saucepan over medium-high heat. Stir in the onion, garlic, and ginger, and cook until tender.
Step 3
Reduce heat to low. Mix in ketchup, brown sugar, molasses, rum, hoisin sauce, tomato paste, vinegar, chili powder, and cayenne pepper. Cook and stir 5 minutes, until well blended and heated through. Stir in remaining rum.

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup minced onion
  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 3 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 2 cups ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons sherry vinegar
  • 3 (1 inch) pieces fresh ginger root, minced
  • 0.25 cup molasses
  • 0.5 cup brown sugar
  • 0.125 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 0.5 cup spiced rum, divided
