Recipe Instructions

Step 1
Bake in the preheated oven until dough is golden brown and apples are soft, about 40 minutes.
Step 2
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Coat a 9x13-inch baking dish with cooking spray.
Step 3
Place apples in a bowl of cold water; set aside while preparing the dough.
Step 4
Combine flour, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl. Cut in shortening with a pastry blender or a fork until crumbly. Add milk; stir until dough comes together. Combine 1 cup brown sugar and cinnamon in a separate bowl.
Step 5
Combine remaining 2 cups brown sugar, water, butter, and nutmeg in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat. Cook until sugar is dissolved and butter is melted, about 5 minutes. Pour syrup over dumplings.
Step 6
Separate dough into 6 equal portions; roll portions out to ¼-inch thickness. Place 1 apple in center of each dough portion; fill core with cinnamon-brown sugar mixture. Wrap apples in dough to enclose; place dumplings into the prepared baking dish.
