Step 1
Allow to rest at least 15 minutes before slicing against the grain.

Whisk oil, soy sauce, cumin, garlic, and pepper together in a large glass or ceramic bowl. Add tri-tip and onion; toss to evenly coat. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and marinate in the refrigerator for 2 hours, or up to 24 hours.

Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C). Remove tri-tip mixture from refrigerator; let rest at room temperature while preheating the oven.

Remove tri-tip from marinade and shake off excess; place on a rack in a shallow roasting pan. Remove onions from marinade; place around tri-tip. Discard remaining marinade.
